Anyone who followed my vintage tip here on ZEIGR in 2016 and bought a Porsche Design chronograph from Orfina should be happy now. Because: Porsche Design is relaunching the black classic – which really deserves this name – for its 50th anniversary. Namely in the form of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 1972, limited to 500 pieces.
Let’s take a quick look at this new chrono, which is made of titanium and has a black titanium carbide coating:
Almost identical to the original Chrono (steel) from 1972 – then produced by Orfina (see logo):
Forefather of all “All Black” watches
What you need to know about this: In 1972, this Porsche Design watch was the first of its kind – completely in black. What is completely normal today and has been trendy again for a few years was actually a minor revolution 50 years ago. Replica Watches UK just weren’t black until then. And it’s fair to say that Porsche Design was already ahead of its time back then. And of course many other watch manufacturers have been inspired by this black chrono and the striking speedometer design of the dial (see also).
Do Believe the Hype – it´s a Porsche
And why should every owner of such a vintage watch be happy? Well, it’s quite possible that the 500 new copies will soon be sold out. Anyone who observes and knows the current watch scene knows that the hype surrounding exclusive replica watches uk has sometimes reached absurd dimensions. Not least thanks to various international watch blogs and lifestyle magazines with enormous reach. Desirability is high – as are the (grey market) prices. At least when a watch is hardly accessible or no longer available at all. Rolex and Fake Patek Philippe have been leading the way for years – and it is increasingly expanding to other watch brands.
And yes, I believe that this will also happen with the new Porsche chronograph. So if you would ask me for a currently good tip – here it is 🙂
At the latest when the limited edition is sold out, the market prices will very likely skyrocket. Then at the latest. And now guess what this might affect as well? That’s right, the vintage models. So the ones I recommended to you six years ago in this article about the Orfina Porsche Design 🙂
They could already increase in value (see ebay – partner link) – but it could increase again. At least that’s my (extended) prognosis. Let’s see if and how quickly it applies. All this is of course without guarantee 🙂
In addition, I strongly assume that the international watch blogs and lifestyle magazines mentioned above will report extensively on this watch. And in such a way that even non-watch fans can see that there is a new (and old) black watch from Porsche Design that looks good on the wrist and in the collection.
Ready for the cinema: Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 1972
If you still haven’t noticed, the film Top Gun: Maverick, which will be released this year, could possibly help you on your way. There has been a suspicion for some time that Tom Cruise – similar to the first part from the 80s – is wearing this very watch. Either the old or the new version. You can find more about this at the watch blog colleagues from Monochrome and in the Watchuseek forum.
Other “options”:
Oh yes, and for all those who don’t get one of the 500 copies: There is still a chance. A further 750 copies will be available with the purchase of a new Porsche 911 special model for the anniversary. Both (watch & car) will have the same serial number. The whole thing goes under the name: Chronograph 1 – 911 Edition 50Y Porsche Design. The watch itself seems to have a few more features.
As far as I can see from the pictures: Different movement with flyback (see red lettering at 6 o’clock), chronometer certificate (COSC), glass bottom, different “PD” logo, different rotor and straps with quick-change system:
However, due to the associated Porsche 911 Targa, this additional “option” should only be an option for very few of us. Unfortunately.
