IWC Big Pilot’s Watch 43 Tourbillon Le Petit Prince review
The 43mm 18k red gold case with an iconic design recalls IWC’s heritage of crafting generously sized aviator tool watches. The choice of red gold, a precious material that is more current in this shade, blends harmoniously with the manufacturing caliber that animates this timepiece, giving the case a timeless charm capable of enhancing the technical and aesthetic qualities of the model.
Clock face
The center of the timepiece is the magnificent midnight blue dial with a fine sunray finish. The golden details, from the hands to the precious applied indexes, release hypnotic glows, creating changing and suggestive light effects. Indexes and hands shine even in the dark thanks to the Super-LumiNova coating. A symphony of colors and reflections that infuses personality into this masterpiece, making every moment unique, marked by the enchanting suspended ballet of the tourbillon at 6 o’clock.
Movement
Bringing it to life is the self-winding IWC 82905 calibre, which guarantees an autonomy of 80 hours thanks to the famous Pellaton optimized winding system invented by the watchmaker of the same name for IWC in the 1940s. Thanks to him, the movements built by IWC are still among the best automatics today.
At the heart of this mechanism is a heart-shaped cam positioned inside the oscillating mass. This allows the movements of the rotor, which acts in both directions, to activate a bascule bridge. This bridge is equipped with pawls that help regulate the speed of the two wheels of the automatic transmission system, thus ensuring an effective and precise connection with the barrel wheel.
Returning to the movement of this Pilot’s Watch, the asteroid-shaped oscillating mass with the Little Prince, visible through the transparent caseback, embellishes the movement with a poetic touch. This movement represents the engineering and craftsmanship of IWC Schaffhausen, capable of fusing mechanical avant-garde and artistic inspiration.
Protagonist of the dial at 6 o’clock, the one-minute flying tourbillon enchants the gaze with its fascinating perpetual rotation that seems suspended in space, thanks to a mechanism made up of 56 ultra-light components. The vane and escape wheel, treated with IWC’s Diamond Shell® technology to minimize friction, help to enhance its performance.
