Golden Ellipse 5738/1R: now with bracelet (and what a bracelet).
If you asked me which non-complicated watch I prefer, I will always answer the Golden Ellipse by Patek Philippe. Its shape and purity have spanned generations and it matters little if it does not have the popularity of a Nautilus in the collective imagination. The charm of this ultra-thin model is unparalleled and Patek has taken center stage after showing the new gold model with bracelet.
And, being Patek, the bracelet is not a simple accessory; it reportedly took fifteen years of development. It is a return to its origins: in the period between the market launch in 1968 and up to 1980, the Golden Ellipse was offered with various types of bracelet, such as the Milanese mesh on the reference 3548 or the “Polish” type strap of the 3605 model .
The chain bracelet is no less important than the flat mesh ones such as the “Milan mesh” and in our opinion the project of the renewed Golden Ellipse takes inspiration from both to identify a new technical and aesthetic motif that virtually unites the two bracelet concepts in one design totally new. The bracelet of the reference 5738/1R is entirely hand-polished. It is made up of 363 parts, of which more than eighty percent is assembled by hand, and individually.
From a functional point of view it resolves a recurring theme on the historic chain bracelets of vintage models: adjustment. It is equipped with a splendid clasp closure decorated with a motif that recalls the link of the bracelet, accompanied by the Calatrava Cross, and offers three adjustment notches. The technical chapter of the watch remains unchanged; the Golden Ellipse 5738/1R adopts an ebony dial and is powered by the ultra-thin caliber 240. We would be curious to see a variant with a blue dial. The list price is 60,590 euros.
